Accurate, compliant breath alcohol testing for safety-sensitive and workplace programs. Conducted by certified Breath Alcohol Technicians using approved evidential breathalyzers.
Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) measures the concentration of alcohol in a person's breath, expressed as a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC). It is the federally approved method for alcohol testing under DOT regulations and is widely used in Non-DOT workplace programs as well.
Unlike urine drug testing, breath alcohol testing detects current impairment β alcohol consumed within recent hours β making it the most relevant test for on-duty safety concerns.
The DOT requires breath alcohol testing under 49 CFR Part 40 for safety-sensitive transportation employees. All DOT alcohol tests must be conducted using an Evidential Breath Testing (EBT) device approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and performed by a certified Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT).
| BAC Result | Classification | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Below 0.02 | Negative | No action required |
| 0.02 β 0.039 | Positive (low) | Removed from duty for minimum 8 hours; no RTD test required |
| 0.04 or above | Positive (violation) | Full DOT violation β SAP referral, RTD testing, and follow-up required |
FMCSA requires 10% of covered employees to be randomly tested for alcohol annually. Selection must be truly random and unannounced.
Required after qualifying accidents. Alcohol testing must be completed within 8 hours β after that window, the opportunity is lost.
When a trained supervisor observes signs of alcohol use. Must be based on specific, contemporaneous, articulable observations.
A BAC below 0.02 is required before an employee returns to safety-sensitive duties following an alcohol violation.
For employers not subject to DOT regulations, Non-DOT breath alcohol testing provides a flexible, employer-defined program to maintain a safe, alcohol-free workplace. Employers set their own cutoff levels and consequences within applicable state laws.
Common Non-DOT alcohol testing scenarios include:
